Michael Hyer

Professional Experience

Born and raised in Northern Ontario as a settler on the territories of the Robinson-Superior Treaty and Treaties 3, 5, and 9, the people and places of the North are near and dear to Michael’s heart.

In 2016, Michael left Northern Ontario to attend the University of Victoria on Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ Territory, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Indigenous Studies. In that time, Michael had the distinct privilege to participate in two inaugural land-based programs on the Coast – the Reconciliation Studies semester on Haida Gwaii, and the Clayoquot Field School on Tla-o-qui-aht Territory. Michael returned to Northern Ontario in 2020 to attend the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law on the territory of Fort William First Nation, graduating with a specialization in Indigenous and Aboriginal Law. In his time at Bora Laskin, Michael had the privilege of serving the Thunder Bay community as a student caseworker at Lakehead University Community Legal Services and the Newcomer Legal Clinic – Michael also served as the student representative on the LUCLS Advisory Committee in 2021-2022. Outside of school, Michael worked in the silviculture industry from 2014-2022 as a planter, foreperson, logistics manager and camp supervisor, overseeing the replantation of ~25,000,000 trees in Northern Ontario and Central Alberta with a focus on employee wellbeing. Michael joined Falconers LLP in the fall of 2022 as a Placement Student and is excited to have returned in the fall of 2023 as an Associate.

Outside the office, Michael is a passionate outdoors enthusiast, and is most likely to be found halfway up a frozen waterfall or halfway down a set of whitewater.
