Falconer Gives Keynote Address at Black Law Students Association Annual Conference

Julian was honoured to be invited to give the keynote address at the 2020 Black Law Students Association of Canada Annual Conference . Speaking to a sold out crowd of Black law students and professionals at the Hotel Pur in Quebec City, Julian addressed the conference’s theme, “Excellence Achieved Through Unity”, through the lens of his experience as a bencher and as a human rights advocate.

Tackling the theme of black excellence in the legal profession, he spoke to the anti-equity agenda currently at work at the Law Society of Ontario. He warned that the StopSOP slate, which began as a goal of eliminating the mandatory statement of principles and progressed to a motion to dismantle the Equity Advisory Group , would continue to target Law Society equity initiatives that have been informed by and are intended to serve Black and racialized legal communities.  Julian urged them to use their voices in upcoming elections and as future members of the bar, to send the message that equity initiatives are a non-negotiable part of legal governance.
