Supreme Court Refuses to Hear the Case of the Former Cop Who Shot Sammy Yatim

On December 6th, 2018, the Supreme Court of Canada determined that an appeal from Mr. Forcillio would not be heard for his conviction and sentence for the attempted murder of Sammy Yatim.

Falconers LLP represents Sammy Yatim’s mother, Dr. Sahar Bahadi who expressed relief that the process was finally over. In an interview with the Toronto Star, Dr. Bahadi stated: “It’s done,” “Still, nothing will compensate me. I lost my son, and nothing will bring him back to me.”

Lawyer for Dr. Bahadi, Julian Falconer stated the following about the Supreme Court’s decision: “It is impossible to overstate the significance of a conviction of a police officer in respect of a shooting death of an emotionally disturbed person, the system acquits these officers as a matter of course. The signal the courts have given is important, because it recognizes “how difficult a deliberation this was for the jury and they respected the process and the unusual verdict.”
