Fatal Police Shooting of Sammy Yatim – Officer Sentenced to Six Years

On July 28, Justice Then sentenced Constable James Forcillo to six years in prison for the attempted murder of Sammy Yatim.

On January 25, 2016, Forcillo was found guilty by a jury of attempted murder in the shooting death of Sammy Yatim on a Toronto streetcar.  Though Constable Forcillo was charged with both second degree murder and attempted murder, the jury was not satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty of murder, and instead convicted on the lesser charge of attempted murder.

The mandatory minimum sentence for attempted murder with a restricted or prohibited firearm is imprisonment for a term of five years.

Constable Forcillo was granted bail on July 29, 2016.

Falconers LLP represents Sammy Yatim’s mother and sister in their civil lawsuit against Toronto Police and Constable Forcillo.
