NO TRANSPARENCY IN REINVESTIGATIONS INTO INDIGENOUS DEATHS IN THUNDER BAY

On Tuesday June 8, 2021 at 1:15pm EDT, the family of the late Stacy DeBungee will be holding a press conference in Thunder Bay, alongside the families of other Indigenous persons whose deaths are being reinvestigated due to deficiencies in investigations conducted by the Thunder Bay Police Service (“TBPS”). The DeBungee family will appear accompanied by their lawyer Julian Falconer. The press conference will be held in Thunder Bay at the Victoria Inn located at 555 Arthur Street West.

The reinvestigations stem from recommendations found in the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (“OIPRD”) Report, Broken Trust: Indigenous People and the Thunder Bay Police Service, which found that systemic racism has left Indigenous deaths in Thunder Bay woefully neglected. Broken Trust called for the independent reinvestigation of nine of those deaths, based on the “lack of quality in the original investigations.”

COVID precautions will be in effect at the press conference.

Press advisory on the press conference can be found here.
