HATTON FAMILY LAUNCHES LAWSUIT AGAINST SOUTH SIMCOE POLICE SERVICE AND ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE RELATED TO THE SHOOTING OF LIAM AND DYLAN HATTON ON AUGUST 15, 2024

The family of Liam Hatton has commenced a $17.5 million lawsuit against members of the South Simcoe Police Service involved in the killing of Liam on August 15, 2024. Dylan Hatton, Liam’s twin brother, was also shot five times by the police.
Bill Hatton and Robin Jackson, Liam and Dylan’s parents, had called police for help during a family dispute. When police arrived, the family explained to the officers that Dylan and Liam were experiencing a mental health crisis and offered to help the officers de-escalate the situation. Instead of listening to the family, the officers ignored them.
When police attended the Hatton residence, Liam and Dylan were in the family vehicle and attempted to leave the property. Sergeant Michael Huck opened fire and struck Liam with a fatal bullet to the head. The officers then shot Dylan five times. He survived after being airlifted to the hospital.
Following the shooting, the Ontario Provincial Police charged Dylan with seven charges, including four counts of Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon. All of the charges were withdrawn on October 3, 2025.
The family remains committed to seeking justice for both Liam and Dylan in respect of what happened on August 15, 2024. A press release prepared on behalf of the family can be viewed here.
