Women in Indigenous Policing Conference Celebrates Leadership, Resilience and the Power of Connection

From April 7-9, 2026, the Women in Indigenous Policing Conference (the “Conference”) took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Conference brought together strong women, both officers and civilians, from various police services to discuss challenges faced by women in Indigenous policing and to celebrate the resilience of women in policing.

On April 9, 2026, Managing Partner Asha James and Associate Shelby Percival had the honour of attending the Conference. Asha and Shelby presented on how to address sexual harassment in the workplace and how challenges in the workplace are compounded for women in Indigenous policing. The audience was engaged and asked thoughtful questions about how to properly formulate policies about sexual harassment and how to create safe spaces and disclosure opportunities. The presentation informed the audience that women who suffer sexual harassment often take time to come forward with their experiences for fear of reprisals, not being believed, or not trusting that their complaints will be adequately investigated.

Asha and Shelby were grateful to be invited and have the opportunity to attend such a powerful forum that highlighted female leadership, resilience, and the importance of connection. The conference created a space for open dialogue around the unique challenges faced by Indigenous women working in policing, while also celebrating their strength, expertise, and contributions to their communities and the profession. It was a privilege to learn from and engage with such dedicated leaders and advocates, and to be part of conversations focused on advancing equity and safety in Indigenous policing.
