Inquest into the Death of Moses Beaver Begins Today

Today, the Inquest into the Death of Moses Beaver began in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Moses, 56, died in hospital on February 13, 2017, after being transferred from the Thunder Bay jail. Prior to his death, Moses suffered a mental health crisis, which required urgent psychiatric treatment that was unavailable to him in his home community of Nibinamik First Nation. Moses’ community wanted him to be medically evacuated and taken to hospital to receive care, but before that happened, he was arrested and transported to the Thunder Bay District Jail. On February 13, 2017, correctional staff found Moses unresponsive in a cell.

Meaghan Daniels and Christopher Rapson of Falconers LLP are honoured to represent Nishnawbe Aski Nation in this proceeding. The inquest is scheduled to continue until May 12, 2023, each day beginning at 9:30am. For those interested in following the proceedings online, click here.
