On April 25, 2024, Julian Falconer, of Falconers LLP participated in an interview with APTN’s Dennis Ward on the program Face-to-Face, which puts a spotlight on people that are making an impact in society, and with a focus on First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people.
On the heels of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Press Conference held at Queen’s Park on April 22, 2024, that called for the disbanding of the Thunder Bay Police Service (“TBPS”), APTN delved into the long standing history of distrust between Indigenous peoples living in Thunder Bay and the TBPS.
The interview covers key failings by the TBPS, including the Seven Youth Inquest, the Broken Trust Report which reviewed 25 unresolved MMIWG cases in Thunder Bay that have remained open and unresolved, Project Cedar, and the deaths of Stacey DeBungee, Mackenzie Moonias, Corey Belesky, and Jenna Ostberg.
During the interview with APTN, Julian Falconer stated:
Families have run out of options when looking for justice and things have not improved since the 2018 release of the landmark Broken Trust report that found systemic racism exists in the Thunder Bay police service at an institutional level.
Falconers LLP is honoured to represent the families of Stacey DeBungee, Corey Belesky, and Jenna Ostberg.
