CELEBRATION AND REFLECTION ON THE 25TH NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY

Today, June 21, 2021, marks the 25th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. As a tragic reminder of the necessity of this Day, Indigenous people across the nation have again been demonstrating resiliency following the first mass grave discovery at a Residential School in Kamloops, BC several weeks ago. This forced reckoning with Canada’s intentionally hidden and brutal colonial history will unfortunately continue as further discoveries are made at other Residential School institutions in other provinces.

While it is important to recognize the lives lost as these discoveries continue across Canada, it is equally necessary to recognize the strength and courage of Indigenous peoples. Every Canadian can do this by celebrating the history, art and culture of all Indigenous peoples, not only on this day, but in their regular lives.

Falconers LLP is honoured to work with many different and distinct First Nations and Indigenous people and communities by assisting them in diverse legal advocacy to protect their rights, cultures and unique identities. Falconers LLP recognizes and stands with all Indigenous peoples as it is a time to celebrate their heritage and diverse cultures. We must all acknowledge that there is more work to do in our important journey to reconciliation.

From the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee nations, Chi-Miigwetch and Nia:wen to all Indigenous people and allies on this special day!
