On January 30, 2024, on the 11th day of the Inquest into the Death of Sammy Yatim, the jury heard closing submissions from the parties before beginning their deliberations.
The jury was provided with a joint list of more than 50 recommendations for their consideration. Amongst the list of proposed recommendations were those related to additional training enhancements such as de-escalation and peer intervention training, and well as updates and adjustments to existing systems designed to oversee and monitor police officers.
Falconers LLP Partner, Asha James, who is counsel for Sammy’s mother Dr. Sahar Bahadi emphasized that “in order to save the next Sammy, we must be proactive not reactive” and that the families of individuals who are killed or seriously injured by a police officer need to have the proper access to financial and mental health supports.
