February 2026 – 30 Years of Celebrating Black History Month

February 2026 marks three decades of celebrating Black History Month. The theme for Black History Month this year is “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme highlights and recognizes the legacy and resilience of Black Canadians which have shaped the past and present and continue to influence and inspire future generations.

Throughout February, Canadians are encouraged to educate themselves on the history and accomplishments of Black Canadians across Canada. However, it is also important to take note and recognize the painful history that Black Canadians have experienced and the systemic barriers that continue to exist in 2026.

As members of the legal profession, Falconers LLP is committed to acknowledging and addressing the past history and injustices faced by Black Canadians and working to meaningfully advocate to change to the remaining barriers and systemic discrimination that Black Canadians experience all too regularly.

In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month through organizations such as the Ontario Black History Society. Activities are taking place throughout Toronto throughout the month of February, including:

  • Toronto Public Library
    • Browse upcoming events at numerous library branches in celebration of Black History Month, including year-round. Some events require advanced registration.
